Art directors fete 'Sleepy Hollow,' 'West Wing'

The Art Directors Guild's 4th annual Production Design Awards were held Feb. 26 at the Beverly Hilton.

Winners included Jon Hutman and Tony Fanning for "The West Wing"; James Spencer, Leslie Thomas and Kristen Pratt for the mini "Introducing Dorothy Dandridge"; Roy Christopher, Stephen Olson and Tamilyn Wright for their production design of The 71st Oscar telecast; and the design team of Rick Heinrichs, Les Tompkins and John Dexter, who nabbed the top prize in the feature film category for "Sleepy Hollow."

Man of the hour

Vet production designer Dick Sylbert was also honored with a lifetime achievement award.

Warren Beatty, who has collaborated with Sylbert on many pics, including "Reds," "Shampoo" and "Dick Tracy," saluted Sylbert, describing him a "friend, teacher, artist, intellectual and creator."

Sylbert described the work of a production designer as being a "seeing eye dog to the blind storyteller, otherwise known as a director. The production designer's job is to tell the director what the story world should look like."

Blake Edwards also received an honor, the Cinematic Imagery Award presented by James Coburn.

Danny Glover, Mimi Kennedy, Eva Marie Saint and host Ted Danson were on hand to present the awards.
