'West' languishing in limbo

The future of the Tom Hanks-produced put drama pilot "West Point" is in limbo.

Fox committed to the project about a group of cadets at the prestigious academy last fall, with execs at the net publicly expressing their excitement to be in biz with Hanks and his Playtone Prods. (Daily Variety, Oct. 4)

Fox has yet to give "West Point" an official greenlight, however. Execs at the net believe the current script for the skein isn't ready to shoot, and are said to be lobbying to have the production commitment rolled over to midseason or fall 2001.

Playtone and production partner Columbia TriStar Television are still pressing for a greenlight for this fall and, short of that, may ask Fox to begin settlement talks for payment of the penalties attached to the project.

A CTTV spokesman declined to comment on the matter, while a Fox rep said the net still hopes to see "West Point" move forward.

"We have a put pilot commitment and we're still working on the script, but this is very much a live project for us," he said.
