AFI honors helmer Malick

Alumnus member of charter class

Terrence Malick will be honored with the American Film Institute's Franklin J. Schaffner Alumni Medal, recognizing the achievements of an AFI graduate.

Last year's Oscar-nominated helmer for "The Thin Red Line," Malick was a member of the AFI Conservatory's first student class. He attended the school from 1969-1971.

Malick will pick up his honor Feb. 17 at AFI, during the org's lifetime achievement tribute to Harrison Ford.

Further recognition thrown Malick's way for his work on "The Thin Red Line" includes directing nods from the Berlin Film Festival, the New York Film Critics Circle and the Chicago Film Critics.

Other projects Malick directed and wrote include "Badlands" (1973) and "Days of Heaven" (1978), the latter of which snagged a Cannes Film Fest best helmer award.

Past winners of AFI's Schaffner prize, named in honor of the late "Patton" director, include Edward Zwick, Carl Franklin, John McTiernan and Amy Heckerling.
