Big buzz on 'Toy 2'

'Beach' debut impressive; 'Sense' stays strong

As "The Beach" got off to a fine start and "Toy Story 2" blitzed the overseas box office, "Sixth Sense" and "End of Days" reached or neared major milestones.

With a foreign cume of $310 million, BVI/Spyglass' "The Sixth Sense" is now the 12th most popular movie overseas and should pass "Terminator 2's" $312 million soon. The Bruce Willis starrer's $588 million worldwide cume has passed "Men in Black's" $587.2 million to become the 10th most popular film of all time and might knock off ninth-place holder "Jurassic Park: The Lost World" at $615 million.

BVI/Beacon's "End of Days" is heading toward the double century club globally, with a worldwide cume of $193 million ($127 million of that earned overseas).

UIP's "The World is Not Enough" (cume: $203.6 million) passed the double century mark overseas, after wowing $3.9 million from 265 prints in Japan (the best Brosnan Bond bow there ever), where Fox's "Anna and the King" (cume: $46 million) grossed $1.5 million from 224 houses.

Fox's "The Beach" staged great bows in South Korea ($1.5 million on 70 screens), Singapore ($472,564 on 31 screens), Malaysia ($258,434 on 37) and Hong Kong ($377,900 on 23). But the Leonardo DiCaprio starrer came off second best, with $643,474 from 18 theaters, in Taiwan, where CTSI's "Stuart Little" (cume: $19.6 million) squeaked a No. 1 $1.5 million from 18 houses, having collected $500,000 in its first nine days from 53 Chinese copies.

In a massive week, BVI's "Toy Story 2" (cume: $66.1 million) staged seven top-spot bows, including France (besting the original by 70%), Hong Kong ($2.1 million from 29 sites to set a local animation record), Sweden ($754,000 from 138 screens, beating the original by 30%), Belgium ($656,000 from 58 prints), Austria ($627,000 from 92 theaters) and Norway ($524,000 from 84 cinemas for a record animation bow). Pic laffed $326,000 from one London site before going wide.

It debuted in the top spot in Germany, garnering $3,055,046 from 670 copies and pushing Constantin's "American Pie" down to second place with a box office of $2,806,379. "American Beauty" racked up $2,072,635 from 257 screens, landing it at number three.

"Toy Story 2's" only second-place bow was in Spain, behind stayer "The Sixth Sense," where UIP's "Snow Falling on Cedars" (cume: $3 million) wilted and CTSI's "The Bone Collector" (cume: $35 million) spooked a good bow.

UIP's "American Beauty" (cume: $35.2 million) charmed France, while scoring $719,060 from 40 sites in Belgium, and held the top spot in the U.K. In France, Belgium and Switzerland, Mandalay's "Sleepy Hollow" (cume: $35.5 million) grossed $860,200 from 415 sites in its first day.
