Tonys host looks Rosie

Legit awards cast commedienne in familiar role

As expected, Rosie O'Donnell will host the 54th annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall on June 4.

It marks the third time O'Donnell will host the theater awards ceremony. She performed similar duties in 1997 and 1998. When the comedienne opted not to headline the Tonys in 1999, the ratings for the TV broadcast of the show dropped precipitously.

For the 23rd year, the Tony Awards will be broadcast live by CBS, with PBS stations carrying the ceremony's first hour.

The eligibility cutoff date for the 2000 Tonys is May 3, and nominations will be announced May 8. The awards are presented by the League of American Theaters & Producers, and the American Theater Wing, which founded the Tonys in 1947.
