Mexican film archive taps topper

De Alba returns to post

MEXICO CITY -- Luz Fernandez de Alba has been named the new director of the Cineteca Nacional, Mexico's national film archive.

A former topper of the National Fine Arts Institute, she replaces Alejandro Pelayo, who last week was appointed head of the troubled Mexican Film Institute.

It will be De Alba's second term in charge of the Cineteca, the government's Art and Culture Commission.

From 1983-88, she oversaw the restoration of much of the archive and the reopening of its public library.
