Lensing began Wednesday in Budapest on the $6 million pic from director Anthony Hickox ("Prince Valiant").
The script by John Penney ("A Breed Apart") centers on a disgruntled laboratory employee (Weller) who breaks into a top-secret facility and unleashes a deadly virus. Accidentally infected, he becomes a carrier and a threat of epidemic proportions.
Hurt will play an environmental specialist; McElhone will be an agent with whom he teams to thwart impending disaster.
Konstantin Thoeren ("Catherine the Great") and Julia Verdin serve as co-producers; Oliver Hess and Kevin Kallberg are co-exec producing.
In addition, Promark has pacted with Germany's UFA Intl. Film and TV Production to co-produce the film. The two companies will split rights in various European territories; Promark will distribute domestically.
Hurt won an Oscar for his performance in 1985's "Kiss of the Spider Woman" and was nominated for "Children of a Lesser God" and "Broadcast News."
Weller's credits include "RoboCop" and Woody Allen's "Mighty Aphrodite."
McElhone, last seen in 1998's "Ronin," also appeared in "The Truman Show."
As it enters its fourth year in the international co-production arena, the UFA unit's credits include "Catherine the Great," starring Catherine Zeta-Jones, and HBO's "Hostile Waters," starring Martin Sheen and Max Von Sydow.
L.A.-based Promark is owned by London's Promark Entertainment Group.
