India submits 'Earth' to Acad

Pic is second film in trilogy

India has chosen Deepa Mehta's "Earth" as its official submission for the Academy Award foreign-language film nomination.

Pic, based on Bapsi Sidhwa's tome "Cracking India," was released by Zeitgeist Films, co-exec produced by Jhamu Sughand and David Hamilton, and co-produced by Anne Masson, Mehta and Delip Mehta.

"Earth" is the second film in a trilogy that began with 1996's "Fire."
