To further that goal, NMN has pacted with TVN Entertainment to launch eGroove, a digital music and entertainment venture.
As part of the deal, TVN, a digital cable content and service provider, has acquired a majority stake in NMN. The move allows TVN the ability to add a digital download music service to the roster of digital products and services the company provides to consumers via cable and satellite television.
"NMN's vision will now be enhanced by the addition of TVN's infrastructure and capabilities," said Duffell, prexy/CEO of NMN. "The combined resources of the two entities has helped propel NMN into a unique position in this fast-moving arena."
Music on demand
EGroove will be spearheaded by Duffell and feature multimedia stations placed in retailers that will provide music products on demand. A Web site, egroove.com, will sell digitally downloaded music and media products.
The move mirrors recent entries into the burgeoning field, such as Digital on Demand's kiosks and Musicmaker's recent pact with Photo-Me to provide vending machines in public places in addition to stores.
The deals hope to serve the downloading interest among consumers, while not shutting out retailers, who still account for more than 96% of all music sales.
Retail interests
With NMN's deal, stores will carry a wide range of inventory comprising new releases, hits and current catalog selections.
In addition, the stores will be capable of producing discs from older artists or with music that may be out of stock. Music can be manufactured on demand in the store in any requested format, such as CD or DVD.
Customers who use the retail-based machines will become part of a secure customer database, which will keep track of individual tastes and interests. Users can also access their individual profiles in any of the stores or via the Web.
The eGroove system will offer the latest in security, compression and distribution, with each store connected by a private communication network provided by TVN via its broadband, satellite and cable network.
"TVN is continuing to expand the array of digital products and services we deliver to consumers," said Stuart Z. Levin, TVN CEO/chairman. "Clearly, music will be a key component of our digital product menu."
TVN Entertainment Corp. is a leading supplier of pay-per-view programming and transactional services for the cable and satellite television industries. TVN also provides the Panda Shopping Network, a live television home shopping service.
