CANNES -- Heralding its definitive return to major-league acquisition of A titles for the Spanish market, Sogepaq, the distribution and rights-brokering division of conglom Sogecable, has taken all Spanish rights to two top titles from Seven Arts Intl.
One is the Robert Duvall starrer "The Cup," a soccer saga to be directed by Michael Corrente and co-starring Michael Keaton; the other is "Morton Orwell," the story of an upscale bank robber involved with the CIA. Pic will be directed by Kevin Reynolds. A-list talent is still to be attached.
Sogepaq pulled out of theatrical distribution in 1997 when it proved unable to sell its pics to free-to-air broadcasters in Spain.
Mounting a comeback, it acquired two titles from Icon Entertainment Intl. at Cannes this year: "Bless the Child," to be directed by Chuck Russell, starring Kim Basinger, with Andy Garcia attached; and the Ireland-set "When the Sky Falls," toplining Joan Allen.
At Mipcom this week, Sogepaq announced a deal with France's Canal Plus Images, a joint distribution venture for Spain involving both film and TV. The initiative formally locks Sogepaq into Canal Plus' pan-European distribution network.
