Helmer honored with Eastman award

NEW YORK -- With his "The Hurricane" gearing up to take the holiday film season by storm, helmer Norman Jewison has been tapped as this year's George Eastman Award winner at ShowEast '99. The award is given annually to a filmmaker whose body of work is respected industry-wide.

Jewison's work includes "In the Heat of the Night," "The Cincinnati Kid," "A Soldiers Story" and "Moonstruck." In March, he received the Academy's Irving Thalberg Award.

Past winners of the Eastman Award include James L. Brooks, Jonathan Demme, Martin Scorsese and Sidney Lumet.

ShowEast '99 will take place from Oct. 18-22 at the Trump Taj Mahal in Atlantic City.
