Alliance Atlantis grabs Canuck helmers' pics

'Law,' 'Marine Life' out in fall

TORONTO -- Alliance Atlantis Communications has pacted with two of Canada's best-known arthouse helmers, John Greyson ("Lilies") and Anne Wheeler ("Better Than Chocolate"), for new pics this fall.

Greyson's "The Law of Enclosures" stars Sarah Polley and Diane Ladd in a love story based on the acclaimed novel by Dale Peck. The pic, a co-production of Pluck Inc. of Toronto and Buffalo Gal Pictures of Winnipeg, begins lensing in Winnipeg on Sept. 26. Pluck's Greyson and Damon D'Oliveira and Phyllis Laing from Buffalo Gal are producing from a screenplay penned by Greyson, with a story by Peck. Odeon Films, a division of Alliance Atlantis, will handle worldwide sales, with Alliance Atlantis distributing in the U.K. and Canada.

Wheeler's "Marine Life" stars Cybill Shepherd and Peter Outerbridge. Based on short stories by Linda Svendsen, pic is produced by Avie Limatainen and Jeanne Stromberg. Harold Tichenor and John Dellmage exec produce. Alliance Atlantis Pictures Intl. will handle global sales, Alliance the U.K. and Canada.

Alliance Atlantis will produce 10 Canuck pics annually, with budgets ranging from $2 million to $20 million.

The Toronto-based company has had a major presence at the Toronto fest. Writer-director Jeremy Podeswa's "The Five Senses," which is being sold by Alliance Atlantis, had its North American preem Friday as the opening-night selection for Perspective Canada, and Allan Moyle's Alliance-backed "New Waterford Girl," had its world preem Sunday. Istvan Szabo's "Sunshine," another Alliance title, will have its world preem today. Epic historical drama stars Ralph Fiennes, Rosemary Harris and Rachel Weisz.
