Howard hot on 'Biography'

'Cops' arrest Court TV auds

Ron Howard has directed the A&E Network to its highest household total ever and third-best rating for an episode of "Biography."

The Sept. 6 cablecast of "Ron Howard: Hollywood's Favorite Son" was viewed in 3.5 million homes, a "Biography" record.

The program's gross rating (combining eastern- and western-U.S. primetime viewership) was a 4.65 in the 76% of U.S. TV homes in which A&E is available. That places "Favorite Son" third all-time behind only the June 1998 bio of Ozzie & Harriet Nelson (4.78) and last January's Andre the Giant seg (4.70).

The Howard episode was able to move ahead in total homes because there are now more U.S. TV homes than when the higher-rated segs ran.

Meanwhile, Court TV's marathon Labor Day launch of the off-net Fox series "Cops" has locked up that service's best non-O.J. Simpson primetime rating ever, a 1.6 in the 36% of U.S. TV homes in which Court TV is available.

Each rating point represents 1% of the homes in which the respective cable service is available.
