The entertainment center, called Mediage, is being built by Sony Urban Entertainment. The Tokyo Bay facility will be the third metropolitan entertainment center developed by the Japanese electronics giant.
The main attractions of Mediage will be a 13-screen multiplex cinema that can seat 3,100, a children's entertainment zone based on Maurice Sendak's "Where the Wild Things Are," and a high-tech, networked gaming center called Airtight Garage.
There will also be shops and restaurants and a six-story atrium.
"The key to our success will be to have good attractions that will keep visitors coming back," said Tomoyuki Osawa, head of the Sony entertainment center development project.
The facility is being built at an estimated cost of 14 billion yen ($128 million).
Sony opened its first entertainment center in San Francisco in June, and officials Thursday said the U.S. center will easily meet its first-year attendance target of 5 million visitors.
A Berlin entertainment center is slated to open next June.
Tokyo's bayfront has emerged as one of the main entertainment centers in Japan. About two years ago, TV web Fuji Television Network became one of the first big entertainment companies to move out to the area as shopping malls, restaurants, Toyota's first theme park and other entertainment venues set up shop on an artificial island in Tokyo Bay.
