Mullan to wear 'Kingdom' crown

Thesp starring in Winterbottom westerner

LONDON -- Scottish actor Peter Mullan will star in "Kingdom Come," a $15 million Western to be directed by Michael Winterbottom.

Madonna has dropped out of the long-gestating project, but Charlize Theron is now in talks to replace her.

The pic, scripted by Frank Cottrell-Boyce and backed by Pathe Pictures, is a romance set during the California gold rush.

Mullan, who won the best actor prize at Cannes last year for "My Name Is Joe," will play an Irish immigrant who sells his wife and daughter for a gold claim, and 20 years later tries to redeem himself.

Shooting is scheduled for January in Canada, with Winterbottom's regular partner Andrew Eaton producing.
