UCLA revamps short program

Documentary filmmaking program also added

UCLA Extension has started a new documentary filmmaking program and brought on new instructors to revamp its short-film program.

The new documentary course, "Making the Documentary Film," is a nine-month sequence providing practical training in writing, directing, producing, editing and marketing a documentary.

The revamped short-film course, "Short Fiction Film 2000," is taught by four new instructors with extensive film experience.

The new instructors are screenwriter Tim Curnen ("Forbidden World," "Ghost Warrior"), Oscar-nominated producer Brenda Goodman, director and producer Dianne Haak Edson and editor, producer and director Wendy Apple.

"There will be a lot more mentoring and it will be much more intensive," said Jane Kagon, associate director of UCLA Extension's Department of Entertainment Studies and Performing Arts.

Five of the best projects from this year's short film program will be screened Sept. 15 at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
