Revs soar at Senator

Prod'n company reports 160% increase

By ED MEZA

BERLIN -- Senator Film AG has reported a 160% increase in revenues in the first half of 1999, already surpassing last year's earnings.

The Berlin-based production company and license broker posted DM 43.9 million ($24 million) in the first six months of the year; last year the group had annual revenues of $23.5 million. Senator's pre-tax profits amounted to $2 million.

Licensing, prod'n up

Senator execs say increases in licensing deals and film production account for the soaring figures. In addition to upcoming releases like "Helden wie wir" ("Heroes Like Us") and the animated children's pic "Kapt'n Blaubaer," Senator recently acquired German-language rights to 19 bigscreen movies.

Senator's distribution arm, which earned $6 million for the group, has been enjoying the quiet success of Wim Wender's Cuban jazz documentary "Buena Vista Social Club."

In addition, agreements with BMG Video and ProSieben helped boost sales in Senator's video and licensing division to $9.2 million.
