Police this week raided a number of homes and confiscated 4,039 counterfeit PlayStation CD games with a street value of 1.5 million rand ($245,000).
The games confiscated were pirated in Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, said Peter Brink, director of the South African Federation Against Copyrighting Theft.
"The syndicate was selling the copied top-of-the-range games, some not even released in South Africa, at around 40 rand ($6.50)," Brink said. The games normally retail for about $60.
South Africa's interactive products industry loses an estimated $2.5 million to $3.2 million a year through piracy.
