Murdoch, Kloiber play ad game with soccer

Rights buy is coup for tm3

BERLIN -- Media moguls Rupert Murdoch and Herbert Kloiber are taking advantage of the opportunities that have opened up since their acquisition of European Champion's League soccer.

Advertisers wishing to secure spots during the coveted matches, which the moguls purchased for their minichannel tm3 earlier this year, will be allowed to do so only if they also place ads during other programming, according to a report in the most recent issue of weekly mag Stern.

The good news for advertisers is that prices will be down compared with the rates charged by previous broadcaster RTL. Ad spots during German matches will be down by 17% and by 29% for other games.

To watch the games, Champion's League fans will have to tune in to the miniweb better known for its lifestyle programming and women's demo. Murdoch and Kloiber, who took both free and pay TV rights for the next four seasons, have decided to sit on the pay TV rights; the only opportunity to see the matches will be on tm3.

The 11th-hour acquisition of the rights was a surprise coup for the channel, which shareholders want to see vying with German league channels in the future. Murdoch purchased a 66% stake in the web late last year from local player Kloiber, who owns the remaining 34%.
