Columbia will produce "Above the Law," a one-hour weekly drama about the residents of an apartment block above a TV station, with McElroy Television, the shingle of former Southern Star power producer Hal McElroy.
The 22-episode order came to light days after Columbia TV general manager Jackie O'Sullivan quit to move to Dublin to be a Columbia consultant seeking Irish co-productions.
Commission slots open
Sources tell Daily Variety that O'Sullivan will be replaced by former Columbia Latin America exec Fran McConnell and Sally-Anne Kerr, who has just resigned as director of Melbourne state screen agency Film Victoria. Kerr's ankling means there are three film commissioner jobs up for grabs Down Under, after the recent ankling of South Australia's Judith McCann (Daily Variety, July 7) and the imminent establishment of a Film and TV office in the southern island state of Tasmania.
Columbia is the first major to establish an active full-time TV production presence in Oz.
