'Klute' lands N.Y. honor

IFP to fete Pakula thriller

NEW YORK -- Alan J. Pakula's 1971 thriller "Klute" will be the first honoree of the WinStar Classic Tribute, which will bow this fall at the Gotham Awards, which are held during the IFP's Independent Feature Film Market.

Tribute -- sponsored by Gotham-based distrib WinStar TV & Video -- is designed to stoke audience interest in classic films as part of the Independent Feature Project's ongoing commitment to New York's indie filmmaking community.

"We're primarily considered an organization that deals with new works," IFP exec director Michelle Byrd said. "One of the things we're hoping to do with (this tribute) is to use it as a launch pad for more screenings and discussion of classic films."

Jane Fonda won an Oscar for her perf in the film, which also starred Donald Sutherland and Roy Scheider.

Among the late helmer's best-known works are the Oscar-nommed "All the President's Men" (1976) and "Sophie's Choice" (1982). Pakula's last film was "The Devil's Own," released in 1997.
