New Horizons set while Primary lines up slate

World preems of 'The Dead,' 'Barefoot Boy With Shoes On' head skeds

NEW YORK -- Off Broadway companies Playwrights Horizons and Primary Stages have revealed their 1999-2000 mainstage season lineups.

The world preem of "James Joyce's The Dead," under the helm of Tony-winning director Jack Hofsiss ("The Elephant Man"), opens Horizons' season on Oct. 1 and will run through Nov. 7. The dramatic tuner is based on the short story from Joyce's "Dubliners" collection, with adaptation by Richard Nelson and music by Shaun Davey.

"Lobster Alice" will make its Gotham premiere Dec. 17-Jan. 23 under the direction of Maria Mileaf. Laffer concerns the meeting of a daydreaming animator's assistant and surrealist Salvador Dali against the backdrop of 1940s Hollywood.

A new untitled romantic comedy by Broadway librettist and legit and film helmer James Lapine will run Feb. 18-March 26.

"The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin," directed by Wilfredo Medina, will close Horizons' season, running April 28-June 4. The tuner is a bittersweet musical journey through conflicts wrought by race and gender. Kirsten Childs wrote the book, music and lyrics.

Primary sked

Leading off Primary Stages' offerings on Oct. 6 is the world preem of "Barefoot Boy With Shoes On," an urban drama by Edwin Sanchez. Primary's artistic director, Casey Childs, will helm the show, which runs through Nov. 7.

Gossip-themed one-man show "Elsa Edgar," starring scribe Bob Kingdom and directed by Childs, will open Dec. 1 and run through Jan. 2.

The Gotham preem of Michael Hollinger's "An Empty Plate in the Cafe du Grand Boeuf" is slated for March 8-April 9. John Rando, who was lauded at last year's Berkshire Theater Festival for his production of the play about a gastronome on a hunger strike, will helm again.

Primary Stages' closer, slotted for May 3-June 4, was not announced.
