Turturro sings for 'Sopranos'

Older sister character joining mob family

Aida Turturro has joined the cast of HBO's "The Sopranos," playing the older sister of the stressed-out New Jersey mobster Tony Soprano.

It's unclear just how Turturro's character, Janice, will be introduced into the much-praised family drama, which begins its second season in January. There was talk that the storyline will find the eldest Soprano daughter returning to the East Coast after some years in California, but that could not be confirmed.

The only reference to the older sis in the first 13-episode "Sopranos" season came in the flashback seg "Down Neck," which revealed that Tony had a younger and an older sister.

Patti LuPone and Annabella Sciorra were also said to have been in the running for the part.

Turturro, cousin of thesps John and Nick Turturro, will be seen on the bigscreen this summer in Warner Bros.' "Deep Blue Sea" and in Martin Scorsese's fall release "Bringing Out the Dead." Her other recent pic credits include "Money Train," "Sleepers" and "Celebrity."

Turturro is repped by manager Peg Donegan and lawyer Ira Schreck.
