Ratings irk Ukraine TV

1+1 sez numbers aren't adding up

MOSCOW -- Olexander Rodnyansky, head of Ukraine's leading commercial channel 1+1, has cried foul at ratings provided by monitoring agency AGB Ukraine.

In a May open letter to colleagues, ad agencies and advertisers, Rodnyansky pointed to illogicalities in results, and claimed that positioning of people meters was biased against 1+1, which broadcasts in Ukrainian, and in favor of the competition, the Inter channel, which airs mainly in Russian.

Faced a 'phenomenon'

"For the last half year we have twice faced the following phenomenon: During the period when main advertisers define their TV budget split, the 1+1 results drop significantly while the main competitor's ratings (Inter) grow fast or at least remain high," he wrote.

He also highlighted inexplicable rating jumps in certain cities.

AGB director Dmitry Dutchyn refrained from comment on Rodnyansky's letter, but said that AGB had started an investigation into the matter.

A 1+1 insider later told Daily Variety that, following receipt of the letter, the channel's ratings had risen by 5%-7%, though neither channel nor competition had altered programming.
