Taper to remember Quintero

Helmer's life to be honored June 7

Late helmer Jose Quintero, best known for his 1950s resurrection of Eugene O'Neill-scripted plays, will be honored at a second memorial service June 7 at the Mark Taper Forum. The first was held two weeks ago in New York.

Quintero directed more than 50 productions on and off Broadway, including the 1956 stagings of O'Neill's "The Iceman Cometh" and "Long Day's Journey Into Night," both starring Jason Robards. The plays ran at the original Circle in the Square in Greenwich Village, a theater venue that Quintero co-founded.

In total, the prolific director brought 19 of O'Neill's plays to life, winning two Tony Awards for Broadway productions "Long Day's" and "A Moon for the Misbegotten."

Quintero's local productions included Ahmanson Theater perfs of "More Stately Mansions" and "Moon," and a run of "Iceman" at the Doolittle Theatre. He died Feb. 26 at age 74.
