New rules for Emmy 2000

New categories, eligibility issues addressed

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has announced rule and procedure changes for the 1999-2000 primetime Emmy awards.

"The modifications are really just a streamlining of the competition's structure," said ATAS' awards director John Leverence. "These are all pretty much technical changes."

These include ways to create and consolidate categories; adding new series categories for cinematography, art direction and casting; and a change in the series Makeup award to allow non-competitive judging of nominees.

There are also changes in eligibility for lighting direction, TD/camera/video control, animated programming, art direction/set decoration and the program categories. Animated programming noms will be chosen by screening panels rather than paper ballots.

And, lastly, the definition of variety, music or comedy programming has been placed in the rules.
