Buyers ride to Pony Canyon

Pony Canyon of Japan is reporting strong interest in Katsuyuki Motohiro's box office high-flyer "Bayside Shakedown," which has grossed $100 million in Japan.

International distribution manager Shinji Sakoda says he will close several Asian territories in Cannes on the $6 million detective drama that has taken Japan by storm.

Pony Canyon, Japan's leading video distributor, is also about to close deals in Hong Kong and Taiwan on Masato Harada's samurai rock 'n' roll movie "Samurai Fiction." German, Finnish, Australian and South Korean rights were closed at this year's AFM.

New in the market is Masahiro Shinoda's 34th feature, "Owl's Castle," based on a story of 16th century ninjas from author Ryotaro Shiba. The pic is set to complete in July and will be released in Japan in the fall by Toho.
