Britton is the third top UPN exec, after the heads of affiliate relations and marketing, to exit the netlet since Adam Ware joined the company as chief operating officer.
Britton, who came to UPN in 1997, is moving to Northern California for personal reasons and professionally to enter a new area of the TV business.
"Television is continuing to evolve, and Replay is the next incarnation of what TV is going to become," Britton said.
Replay is a service that replaces videos by allowing people to download and store channels digitally and to freeze and rewind live TV.
To show there are no hard feelings about the exit, UPN CEO Dean Valentine noted that "Layne's a very good friend of mine and has been for more than a decade."
Prior to joining UPN, Britton was president and COO of Ticketmaster Ventures and was VP of business affairs at CBS and NBC.
