Caine inks 'Quills' deal

Thesp joins Winslet, Rush in Marquis de Sade pic

NEW YORK -- Michael Caine will join Kate Winslet, Geoffrey Rush and Joaquin Phoenix in the Philip Kaufman-directed "Quills" for Fox Searchlight.

The film, which is being produced by Industry Entertainment's Julia Chasman and Nick Wechsler with the director's son, Peter Kaufman, is the story of the final days of the Marquis de Sade. It's based on the play by Douglas Wright, who wrote the script.

Sade (Rush), confined to an asylum because of his pornographic writings, engages in a battle of wills with a young priest (Phoenix) who runs the institution, where the two fight over the loyalty of a maid (Winslet) who is helping to get Sade's pennings to the populace. Caine will play a doctor who becomes Sade's chief adversary.

Caine recently completed starring with Charlize Theron and Tobey Maguire in the Lasse Halstrom-directed "Cider House Rules" for Miramax. He is repped by ICM's Toni Howard.
