Tony panel balks at 'Brown' book writers

Scribes ruled ineligible

NEW YORK -- The Tony Awards administration committee on Thursday ruled that Charles M. Schulz and Clark Gesner, book writers and revisers of "You're a Good Man Charlie Brown," will not be eligible for a Tony Award.

The decision could have easily passed into obscurity were it not for the fact that "Annie Get Your Gun" book writer Peter Stone was deemed eligible.

The committee ruled that the producers of "Charlie Brown" simply never asked for the two to be considered until two months after official deadlines passed.

"New books of revivals aren't generally considered," said Jim Byk, a spokesman for "Charlie Brown." "It really hasn't been done before. We knew it was late, but nothing ventured, nothing gained."

Back on Feb. 19, Fox Theatricals requested that "Charlie Brown" and its actors be made eligible for noms, but failed to do the same for the book writers.

Calls to Fox Theatricals execs were not returned.

Meanwhile, the committee determined Pam Gems' soon-to-shutter "Marlene" will be considered a tuner. Star Sian Phillips will be eligible for nomination as best actress in a musical.

Chet Walker, Ann Reinking and, of course, Bob Fosse were denied co-choreography eligibility for Livent's "Fosse." Only helmer Richard Maltby Jr. will be eligible for a best direction nom.
