Virgin bows 14-screen megaplex in Japan

Move puts exhib on map

TOKYO -- Virgin Cinemas Japan Ltd. made its debut in the Japanese multiplex market on Thursday with the opening of the largest cinema complex in the country, near the major southwest city of Fukuoka.

Virgin's 14-screen megaplex has seating for about 3,000 and is located in the Mega Mall Torius Hisayama mall. The opening of the new theater complex puts Virgin on the map as a player in the Japanese exhibition market.

Virgin is planning to invest about $100 million to develop complexes in 20 sites in Japan over the next five years.

Along with tackling the lucrative Japanese market, Virgin has launched a multiplex development plan for the U.S.

The leading multiplex operator in Japan is Warner Mycal. The company has 190 screens, which represents about 10% of the movie screens in the country. The company went on a new theater opening blitz in March as it added six facilities with a total of 46 screens to its lineup.
