Cable ops reject Star rate hike

Outlets threaten blackout of Indian sports channel

NEW DELHI -- Cable operators in India have vowed to fight a proposed 50% subscription rate hike by Star Sports, threatening to black out the sports channel if the increase is not repealed.

Star plans to up the rates barely a month before the Cricket World Cup matches, scheduled to start May 14.

Star Sports announced rate increases from Rs. 3.30 (8¢) to Rs. 4.99 (12¢) per household per month. Star Sports and ESPN are the only channels with cricket telecasting rights in India.

The anger of the cable operators has intensified due to the recent decision of free channels like Star Plus, AXN, Discovery, TNT, National Geographic and Animal Planet to become pay channels. Cable operators have already blacked out these channels in metropolitan areas for brief periods and would again boycott them unless a solution is reached.
