Spanish distrib sets sights studio-style

Aurum unveils slate of films for 1999

MADRID -- One of Spain's largest film companies, producer-distributor Aurum Producciones, announced plans to move into studio-style production as it unveiled a slate of films for the upcoming year.

The new strategy will see Aurum becoming the first Spanish company to develop most of its film properties with an inhouse team of screenwriters and to then attach directors.

Previously, Aurum either co-financed domestic co-productions with other top Spanish production houses, such as Sogetel or BocaBoca, or produced films brought to them by director-auteurs.

The move into studio-style production is partly dictated by Aurum's first-option deal with broadcaster Antena 3 TV, which looks to acquire commercial rather than art pics.

Aurum's scribe team includes Nacho Faerna, who scripted the camp comedy thriller "The Ugliest Woman in the World," and Curro Royo and Juan Vicente Pozuelo, who have penned the first two scripts in what is expected to be a series of teen horror pics, "Don't Try to Know More" and an untitled teen horror comedy.

More immediate highlights in Aurum's slate of seven pics in production include "I Will Survive" and "Washington Werewolves," directed by Mariano Bar-roso ("Ecstasy"), which is likely to receive a Cannes or Venice fest berth.
