Discovery reaches 1 mil subscribers

Discovery Channel in Japan said Thursday that it passed the 1 million subscriber mark in the country only 21 months after the channel was launched.

Discovery said it is aiming to top the 1.5 million mark by the end of 1999, adding that shows such as "Titanic Live" and the recent "Egypt Week" special have helped boost viewership.

Discovery, in its Japanese-language customized form, is available on the country's two direct-to-home satellite platforms as well as carried by more than 100 cable systems. Discovery Channel Japan is owned in a partnership between Discovery Asia Inc. and the Tokyo-based cable company Jupiter.

CVI Media buys D&D

CVI Media Group, a joint venture between British entertainment company Chrysalis and Dutch publishing group VNU, has paid $5 million to buy Dutch TV producer D&D. CVI already owns Dutch indie IDTV.
