BVI exits Argentine distrib

Col joint venture terminated, other Latin pacts intact

Buena Vista Intl. and Columbia TriStar Film Distributors Intl. will terminate their joint distrib venture in Argentina in March of next year, the two companies announced April 1.

BVI and CTFDI will maintain their other joint ventures in Latin America (Brazil, Mexico and Colombia) and Asia.

The split in Argentina came because BVI, which had previously utilized the CTFDI infrastructure, decided to set up its own operation.

The move makes sense for BVI because the distrib has a strong focus in Argentina, including an equity stake in local production powerhouse Patagonik Film Group. BVI has distribbed a number of Argentinean pics, including "Ashes from Paradise" and "Cohen vs. Rosi."

Its sales arm, Buena Vista Film Sales, also sold the foreign rights to those pics.

Both studios believe Argentina is set to become a more lucrative territory due to long-anticipated improvements in the exhibition sector.
