Internet company lands film deal
It has commissioned "Beginner's Guide to the Internet," a half-hour drama starring John Turturro, which, not so incidentally, shows viewers how to surf the 'Net using Lycos.
In the film Turturro plays a schoolteacher and would-be comedian who finds his car broken down in rural Pennsylvania (actually shot in Massachusetts). While awaiting the repairs he shows the local yokels how to send e-mail, do online searches and even get a repair guide for the mechanic working on his car. The intro to the 'Net comes across painlessly rather than as lecturing, which is the whole point.
Produced by Reunion Prods. of Watertown, Mass., and directed by Fred Schilpp, the half-hour film has been released on video and is available as a no-charge rental in more than 4,000 Blockbuster Video stores. Lycos is also making it available to schools and libraries.
