The Black Film and Videomakers' Association (BFVA) was launched in Cape Town last week with an initial membership of around 80. "The main aim is to get a serious stake in the economy in terms of motion pictures and television," BFVA chair Chris Catuza told Daily Variety.
"The industry is totally white, and while there is an increasing number of black people active in the industry, the money still goes to those established white groups," he said. According to Catuza, the BFVA did not wish to isolate itself from white people, but was looking for partners "who will benefit in a working relationship with us."
The BFVA will operate as an economic empowerment vehicle, with 70% of the annual fees being invested in its investment arm, Africa Now Media, and the balance being used by the BFVA.
