Companies to launch direct-to-home platform

NEW DELHI -- Zee TV is reported to be in discussions with French paybox Canal Plus for a joint venture to launch a 100-channel direct-to-home platform later this year.

Canal Plus is to provide the set-top box technology and subscriber management systems as well as becoming an investor in the project.

Zee plans to charge a fee for all broadcasters who wish to be on the Zee/Canal Plus DTH platform.

The DTH package will include Zee's own channels -- including entertainment, news and music -- and some new regional language channels to be launched by the network.

Meanwhile, Zee is independently planning a public issue in India and will raise funds in Europe and North America for launching the proposed 100-channel network.
