NEW YORK -- Miramax Films, which will co-finance "Bounce" with Universal Pictures, has picked up Frank Cappello's romantic comedy "The Rain in Spain" out of turnaround at U.
Nick Wechsler of Industry Entertainment brought the project to Miramax and will produce it for the Gotham-based studio.
Based on a true story, "Spain" follows a U.S. Air Force lawyer who is sent to a village in Spain to smooth things over after a midair collision leaves several undetonated hydrogen bombs in the area. As the lawyer's stay is prolonged, he becomes enchanted by the village's charms.
"Frank Cappello wrote a remarkable script," Miramax co-chairman Harvey Weinstein said. " 'The Rain in Spain' is a magical story that is beautifully written and has all the elements of a great film. Nick Wechsler and I have shared great success together, and I look forward to working as a team on yet another special project."
'sex' in his past
Wechsler exec produced the Miramax release "sex, lies and videotape" and is producing James Gray's "The Yards" for the company. The tale of corruption in the Queens commuter rail business, starring Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron, opens later this year.
Cappello's previous credits include "Suburban Commando" and HBO's "No Way Back."
Jon Gordon, Miramax senior vice president of production, will oversee "Spain" for the studio.
The deal was negotiated on behalf of Miramax by Gordon, senior veepee of business and legal affairs Steven Hutensky and veepee of business and legal affairs Stuart Ford.
Attorney Diane Golden of Katz, Golden & Sullivan and Rima Greer of Above the Line Agency repped Capello. Cliff Gilbert-Lurie of Ziffren, Brittenham, Branca & Fischer repped Wechsler.
