Reiner enters, exits laughing at tribute

Simon, Van Dyke share memories of helmer

Even Mel Cooley would have cracked a smile Wednesday night during the salute to Carl Reiner, staged at the Directors Guild Theatre as part of the Museum of Television & Radio's annual William S. Paley Television Festival.

Panelists Neil Simon, Sam Denoff, Larry Gelbart, Nanette Fabray and Dick Van Dyke regaled the packed house with memories of working with Reiner on Sid Caesar's fabled "Your Show of Shows" and on the classic 1960s sitcom "The Dick Van Dyke Show."

The laughs kept coming until moderator Ron Simon noted that Reiner's March 20 birthday was approaching. Never one to miss a chance to engage his audience, Reiner closed out the sesh by leading the crowd in a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday."
