AMSTERDAM -- The European Commission has kicked $1 million into the development, sales and marketing of a pilot program to be produced by Endemol Entertainment on the information society.

With the backing of the EC, Endemol will seek production, distribution and broadcast capital for the one-off show, a production that the EC plans to broadcast live next fall to some 350 million people in 22 territories.

The project was initiated by the EC's Directorate General XIII, which has been involved in a campaign to raise awareness about and create a more user-friendly information society.

"The level of our financial support for this project illustrates what a very important undertaking it is for us," an EC representative said.

Endemol spokesman Thomas Notermans said the firm would be contacting blue chip companies around Europe for possible sponsorship of the program, which will also make use of the latest technologies to get the message across. Among platforms set to be dealt with in the program are Internet, digital television, mobile and interactive telecommunications.
