Waters to yak at Spirits

Indie bad boy created several quirky pix

Iconographic filmmaker and indie bad boy John Waters will give the keynote address March 20 at the 14th Independent Spirit Awards.

The Baltimore-based Waters gained notoriety in the 1970s with a series of film comedies that walked a delicate tightrope between art and the outrageous. With the acquisition of "Pink Flamingos" by upstart distrib New Line in 1972, his work began to gain wider attention, and such films as "Mondo Trasho" and "Female Trouble" with Divine and Mink Stole became staples of the midnight movie circuit.

His unique comic sensibility was also responsible for more mainstream fare, including "Cry-Baby" and "Serial Mom." Most of his films retain a black comic outlook toward social mores and chronicle dysfunctional families.

Additionally, this year's lineup of celebrity presenters was announced and will include: Alec Baldwin, Lara Flynn Boyle, Joan Chen, Don Cheadle, Illeana Douglas, Gina Gershon, Jeff Goldblum, Heather Graham, Lisa Kudrow, Jason Lee, Vicki Lewis, Heather Matarazzo, Andie MacDowell, Debbi Morgan, Randy Quaid, Michael Rappaport, Geoffrey Rush and Mink Stole.

"Affliction," "Claire Dolan," "Gods and Monsters," "Velvet Goldmine" and "A Soldier's Daughter Never Cries" are competing for best picture and "Buffalo 66," "High Art," "The Opposite of Sex," "Pi" and "Slums of Beverly Hills" are the finalists in the first feature category.
