DGA to honor Caminiti

Associate director recognized for 'SNL' work

Longtime "Saturday Night Live" associate director Robert Caminiti will receive the Directors Guild of America's Franklin J. Schaffner Achievement Award on March 6.

The Schaffner award, given to an associate director or stage manager to recognize service to the industry and the DGA, will be presented to Caminiti at the guild's 51st annual awards show at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

Caminiti's television career began in 1956, when he joined NBC as a mimeograph operator. In the early 1960s, he was a stage manager on the game show "Concentration," followed by stints on "The Doctors," "Jeopardy" and "The Tonight Show." After filling in as an associate director on "Jeopardy," he moved into the post full-time in 1967.

In 1968, Caminiti worked as an associate director for NBC's coverage of the presidential primaries and the Democratic National Convention in Chicago. During the 1970s, he worked on most of NBC's game shows, including "To Tell the Truth," "Jackpot," "Three on a Match," "Winning Streak" and "What's My Line?"

When Tom Snyder came to New York to host "Tomorrow," Caminiti became the associate director. In 1982, he moved to "Saturday Night Live," where he has been associate director for 17 years.
