Music to Eye's ears

Grammys gives CBS sweeps lead in homes

CBS brass were singing a happy tune as Wednesday's Grammy Awards kudocast nudged the Eye web into first place -- by a hair -- in the February sweeps household ratings derby.

CBS estimated that 57 million people watched at least part of the three-hour show, which translated to an average audience of 24.8 million viewers. The 41st annual Grammy Awards averaged a 16.6 household rating and 26 share, down slightly from last year's 17.0/27, to rank as the second highest-rated Grammycast since 1993.

But more importantly for CBS, the Grammys improved its demo performance over last year's telecast, posting a 7% hike among adults 18-49 (11.5/28) and a 26% jump among adults 18-34 (12.1/32). CBS won the night handily in all key male and female demo categories.

For all the advance hubbub, NBC's controversial "Dateline" interview with Juanita Broaddrick, the Arkansas woman who claims she was raped 21 years ago by now-President Clinton, delivered strong but not spectacular numbers for the Peacock. From 8-9 p.m., "Dateline" averaged a 9.7/15, up 10% in rating from the newsmag's Wednesday season average of 8.8/14.

For the sweeps to date, CBS is ahead in homes with a 9.9/16. NBC is a second with a 9.8/16, followed by ABC (8.5/14) and Fox (7.0/11). The Peacock retains a wide lead in the adults 18-49 measure, however, with a 6.2 sweeps average, followed by Fox (5.3), ABC (5.2) and CBS (4.2).

NBC could yet pull ahead in households with Sunday's bow of the heavily promoted made-for "Alice in Wonderland."
