DGA taps Bochco for diversity kudo

'Blue' creator's commitment to minority hiring awarded

Steven Bochco, creator of "Hill Street Blues," "L.A. Law," "Murder One" and "NYPD Blue," will be presented with the Directors Guild of America's Diversity Award at the union's March 6 awards show.

The award, bestowed for only the second time, honors Bochco's "consistent commitment" to the hiring of women and ethnic minorities, a DGA statement said. The Diversity Award was first presented in 1997, to Bruce Paltrow, John Wells and Christopher Chulack.

Leading man

"Steven Bochco has long been a leader in the crucial area of hiring DGA women and ethnic minorities," guild president Jack Shea said. "His commitment to diversity has been outstanding, from his hiring of directors to the selection of the directing team. If every showrunner, network head and studio chief followed Bochco's lead, the DGA's annual women and minority report would paint a much brighter picture than it does."

Nominations for the Diversity Award were submitted by DGA members, studio and network executives and agents.

Bochco is also in line for a lifetime achievement award from the Producers Guild of America, on March 3.

The 51st annual DGA Awards will be held at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
