'Swingers' duo eye shot at 'Moon' pic
Par shopping for helmer
Vaughn is in talks to star and Favreau is rewriting the offbeat comedy, which centers on a tiny U.S. commonwealth's fictional attempt to launch a manned space program.
Producer Robert Simonds, hot off his successes on "The Waterboy" and "The Wedding Singer," has joined Mutual's Mark Gordon and Gary Levinsohn on the project.
Favreau is expected to offer a grittier take on "Guam," which originally was penned by David Diamond and David Weissman. In its earlier incarnation, the pic focused on a retired astronaut who missed out on his one chance to go to the moon and is hired by an entrepreneur who hopes to bring honor to Guam by launching a lunar shot.
The new version will center on a younger group of washed-up National Aeronautics and Space Administration cowboys, one of whom is the son of a retired astronaut. Favreau also may have a role in the pic.
There is currently no director on the long-gestating project, to which Daniel Stern and Peter Segal have at various times been attached as helmers. Bill Pullman was at one point set for the astronaut role.
Vaughn most recently starred in "Psycho," "Clay Pigeons" and "Return to Paradise." Favreau, who wrote and starred in "Swingers," also has appeared in "Very Bad Things" and "Deep Impact."
Vaughn and Favreau are repped by UTA.
