Televisa, Azteca pact

B'casters to share rights to Mexican soccer team

MEXICO CITY -- Broadcasters Televisa and TV Azteca have set aside their squabbles and agreed to share lucrative rights to Mexico's national soccer team.

First fruits of the pact came Wednesday night when Team Mexico squared off against Argentina in Los Angeles.

Games involving the national squad are traditionally the most profitable fare on Mexican TV, drawing the highest ratings and inducing advertisers to pay huge sums for spots.

For the foreseeable future, third-party company Comercializadora de Espectaculos will sell all the ad time and divide the revenues between the broadcasters.

Sixty-second spots for Wednesday's game were reportedly being sold at a whopping $100,000 plus 15% tax, and the ads aired simultaneously via both broadcasters.

Leonardo Simpser of Deutsche Morgan said that, given the skyrocketing cost of TV rights to teams at the club level, the decision to share rights to the national team sounds like an ideal plan for both Televisa and Azteca.
