DGA taps blurb helmers

Four get top spot noms

A half-dozen directors of commercials were nominated Thursday by the Directors Guild of America for awards as a result of their work in 1998.

The DGA listed 23 commercials for which the helmers were responsible, including three ads for Miller Brewing Co. and two each for Sony Playstation, Taco Bell and Nike.

Announcements were made by DGA president Jack Shea and awards committee chairman Howard Storm. Winners will be announced at the 51st annual DGA Awards dinner on March 6 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

The nominees are:

  • Amy Hill & Chris Riess -- the Saturn Cars spot "Driving Range," for Hal Riney & Partners agency; Bronson Medical Centers' "Pediatrics," Biggs & Gilmore; Amsouth's "Life," Slaughter/Hanson; Long John Silver's "London Loves Us," Jordan McGrath Case & Taylor. It's the first DGA nomination for Hill & Riess;

  • Peter Darley Miller -- 360 Communications' "Chase," The Martin Agency; Slice Goodby's "Dissection," Silverstein & Partners; Midway/NFL Blitz's "Target Practice," DDB Needham; Sony Playstation's "Scout," TBWA/Chiat Day; Nike's "The Great Magician," Wieden & Kennedy. Miller has not been nominated previously for a DGA award;

  • Rocky Morton -- Sega's "Egg," Ground Zero; Taco Bell's "Bobbing Head," TBWA/Chiat Day; Fox Sports' "Feet," Cliff Freeman & Partners; Sony Playstation's "Laundromat," TBWA/Chiat Day; Taco Bell's "Romeo and Juliet," TBWA/Chiat Day. This is Morton's first DGA nomination;

  • Tarsem -- John Hancock's "Sarajevo," Hill Holiday; Miller Brewing Co.'s "Seance," Fallon McElligot; Miller Brewing Co.'s "Dances with Dog," Fallon McElligot; Beck's "Romance," Saatchi & Saatchi. It is Tarsem's second DGA nomination; he won the award in 1996;

  • Kinka Usher -- Sony's "Egg," Young and Rubicam; Mountain Dew/Pepsi's "Michael Johnson's World," BBDO; Miller Brewing Co.'s "Cupid," Fallon McElligott; Nike's "Undercover Ushers," Wieden & Kennedy; Hallmark's "Neighbor Lady," Leo Burnett. Usher was previously nominated in 1995 and '96.
