'Violins' sings at Genies

McKellar has stellar night at Canuck Oscars

TORONTO -- It was violins for the 19th annual Genie Awards, Canada's answer to the Oscars, at the ceremony Thursday evening.

The Rhombus Media/Mikado production of "The Red Violin" pocketed eight out of a total 21 awards up for grabs, including best motion picture, best director (Francois Girard) and best screenplay (Girard and Don McKellar). A sumptuous Canadian/Italian co-production, the epic tale of a violin spanning centuries and continents also took awards for cinematography, art direction, costume, music and sound.

Seth's 'Journey' to award

Roshan Seth won for best actor in the Canadian/U.K. co-production "Such a Long Journey," directed by Sturla Gunnarsson. The film also received Genies for editing and sound editing.

Sandra Oh won for best actress and Callum Keith Rennie was named best supporting actor for their roles in McKellar's "Last Night."

Double-pix winner

It was indeed a night of kudos for actor-director-writer McKellar, who co-wrote "The Red Violin" and wrote and starred in his feature directorial debut "Last Night." The two films took 10 awards in total, and McKellar received the Claude Jutra award for direction of a first feature.

The Blockbuster Golden Reel award for top Canadian box office gross went to the popular Quebec comedy "Les Boys."
