Twiggy girds for role in Off B'way's 'Gertie'
Talk of Rees, Sandling to co-star
"It's about their life and love together," said its producer, Marvin Krauss, who confirmed Twiggy's commitment to play Gertrude Lawrence in a springtime bow.
Twiggy (nee Leslie Hornby), the dancer and singer so-named for her sticklike model's figure, last appeared on Broadway in 1983 opposite Tommy Tune in "My One and Only."
Coward, of course, was best known for his ability as both a superlative actor and playwright of the 1920s, '30s and '40s with such works as "Present Laughter" "London Calling!" "Private Lives" and the Oscar-winning "Cavalcade."
Coward's role has not been cast as yet, Krauss said, adding that the Coward short list is said to include Roger Rees (who's currently starring Off Broadway in the CSC production of "The Misanthrope," opposite Uma Thurman) as well as Brit thespian John Sandling.
Lee Lawson is attached to helm, with sets being designed by Tony Walton.
Insiders familiar with the production expect it to land at one of two Ben Sprecher-owned Off Broadway houses, either at the Promenade or the Variety Arts.
Sprecher declined to comment on the negotiations.
Insiders said that additional producers will likely join the production; currently, Edgar Doby is understood to be considering partnering with Krauss, who's produced such hits as "La Cage Aux Folles." He will also be the show's general manager.
Doby did not return calls seeking comment.
